Special Olympics Alberta

Alberta

Special Olympics Alberta (SOA) is committed to enriching the lives of Albertans with an intellectual disability through sports. Special Olympics athletes develop sport skills, social skills, and self- esteem, which assist them in becoming actively involved in recreational, educational and employment opportunities in their local affiliates across the province.

SOA offers year-round sports programming to over 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 140 communities across the province.

Beyond sports, Jon’s mother believes Special Olympics has given her son a voice. She stated that Jon was born with a paralyzed vocal cord, so his voice is soft, but his confidence in speaking has only grown in the past few years with Special Olympics.

How your donations will help

Your donations will support grassroots Special Olympics programs in Alberta and directly impact local athletes that are returning to in-person sports after being virtual for the past two years. For every $1 invested in Special Olympics community programs, a minimum of $7 of social benefit is created through improved athlete physical and mental health and increased athlete employment. Funding will also help volunteers by providing training supports to ensure high quality programs are delivered across Alberta.
