Special Olympics Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan
Special Olympics Saskatchewan is dedicated to enriching the lives of athletes with an intellectual disability through sport. The organization provides year-round grassroots community sport programs, competitive programs, and sends athletes to Special Olympics National and World Games.
Special Olympics Saskatchewan offers multiple programs, including sport and health-focused programs. Good health improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by improving each Special Olympics athlete’s ability to train and compete in sports. Special Olympics works with global partners, governments, and policy-making organizations to ensure health services, education, and opportunities reach individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID).
“My life is so full now because Special Olympics provides me with much more than just sport. Of course, I love the different activities which help me to stay in shape, but there is so much more. I have met so many friends and get to see them all year round since there are both summer and winter sports. Exercise, competition, cheering on my buddies, meeting special people, great coaches and tons of fun – all are part of my awesome Special Olympics experience.” – Ben, Special Olympics Saskatchewan athlete
How your donations will help
The money raised will go towards providing low cost, high impact sport programs for athletes with an intellectual disability, including the Unified Sport program. A competitive environment in which athletes from different social backgrounds compete together, has the potential to bridge perceived and real social divides. Some research has noted that Unified Sport partners have shown significant improvements in their attitude toward individuals with disabilities as a result of playing on a Unified Sport team. Other research has cited similar conclusions about Special Olympics athletes having a heightened level of awareness of their peers without disabilities.
