Special Olympics Nova Scotia operates based on a vision that sports will open hearts and minds towards people with intellectual disabilities and create inclusive communities all over the world. Special Olympics strives to make this vision a reality by providing better quality sport opportunities supported through health initiatives. At the same time, they step up efforts to use their work to tell the world about the talents and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities The team at Special Olympics NS want to change lives for the better, first for their athletes but also their families, friends, and our communities. This ripple continues through all society and across the world.
We had an athlete in a rural community with a dream to attend a National Games. He qualified for Provincials and earned a selection to Team NS. The coach of 20 plus years was having trouble paying for gas and healthy foods needed to get him through his training. Special Olympics NS provided funds for the travel and Sobeys gift cards to purchase healthy food. The athlete had his best performance ever at the National Games. He did so well … he earned a spot on Team Canada and travelled to Abu Dhabi in 2019.
How your donations will help
Your donation will support all sport programs by reducing or eliminating fees for athletes to participate. This is a key to success, as financial ability is often a barrier to participation. Specific programs of focus include Youth and Community Programs, supporting Provincial Games, and Team NS.
