Special Olympics Manitoba

Manitoba

Special Olympics Manitoba is committed to enriching the lives of Manitobans with an intellectual disability through sports. Through Special Olympics, athletes develop sport skills, social skills, and self- esteem, which assist them in becoming actively involved in recreational, educational and employment opportunities in their local affiliates across the province.

As an organization, Special Olympics Manitoba has officially been around for 35 years. However, the seeds of the organization certainly pre-date the year the organization was incorporated in 1980. Ex-NHL hockey player Ted Irvine brought the concept of Special Olympics to Manitoba in the 1970s, which was picked up by the organization’s first Executive Director, Dan Johnson. The organization sent athletes to both the 1978 National Summer Games in Regina and the 1979 World Games in Brockport, New York. Special Olympics Manitoba offers year-round sport training programs and competitive opportunities in 18 official sports.

“Josiah is through the moon to be able to swim again with the Polar Bears! He is so thankful to participate in many online events through Special Olympics but getting together with friends in the pool is extra special! Thank you, Special Olympics Manitoba!” -Josiah’s Mom
