St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) is now home to one of four district stroke centres in the South West LHIN. As of April 2016, the district stroke centre is a specialized unit on D Wing of the Continuing Care Centre, dedicated to providing both acute and rehabilitative care for all stroke patients.
“In this new integrated model, our stroke patients remain on the same unit, in the same bed, surrounded by health team members with expertise in stroke care to help them through their entire patient journey. This unit will meet best practice standards in the delivery of care,” says Dr. Nancy Whitmore, Chief of Staff and Vice-President at STEGH. “This is an exciting time for our hospital and our community as we move ahead with opening a district stroke centre.”
These changes come as part of a larger realignment of stroke services in the LHIN. The other three district stroke centres are London Health Sciences Centre (University Hospital), Stratford General Hospital, and the Owen Sound hospital site of Grey Bruce Health Services.
